He comes to stay with his aunt Saroj, played by Randeep Hooda, who is an older man. He starts working at a call centre where everyone in the office are very much into singing. A challenging dance number called 'Dhoom Machale' gets added to their repertoire, but they are so busy working that they don't have time to learn it step by step. Salman Khan's character is made fun of because he can not sing or dance well. He goes to a nearby college to learn, but when he gets there he is shocked at how beautiful the girls are. His eyes are set on Mariam, played by Preity Zinta, who is the college belle. He tries to impress her by singing and dancing but she thinks he is very simple and immature. As time goes on he eventually learns the dance number 'Dhoom Machale' and starts working at the call centre full-time. Then he has to convince her by showing off his dancing skills. The film climaxes with the college dance competition where all the four finalists are Salman Khan, Preity Zinta, Shahid Kapoor, and Deepak Dobriyal. "Kal Ho Naa Ho" received generally positive reviews from critics who praised its music, performances and direction. Ramesh Sippy's screenplay was also commended.
